Homemade Bathroom Cleaners

A Greener Home Part 3

Cleaning the bathrooms is one of my biggest chores with 2 boys and a husband...I need cleaners that work, kill germs and don't make me loopy in the process.....I also don't like to flush all those toxic chemicals down the drain.....not to mention  the savings when you make your own.  I have found that you can clean the whole bathroom with 4 ingredients,  soda, vinegar, alcohol and borax.  This post also includes the directions for how to make a wonderful Natural Air-Freshener that works for months........

My Favorite Flowering Perennials

Garden Journal

I love to plant perennials, mainly because I'm frugal and I love things that last.  One of my favorite plants which is actually an evergreen vine, is Confederate Jasmine.  I wish you could smell it.......I have it planted next to the front porch so we can enjoy the sweet smell while we relax on the porch swing in the evenings with a glass of sweet tea and maybe a big slice of, "Buttermilk Pound Cake".........

Honey-Wheat Dinner Rolls

 Easy and Delicious

Golden, light, tender and a little sweet.....these are my favorite dinner rolls to make.  Frozen rolls can be expensive and full of preservatives.  You can  make these for around a dollar and there's no comparison when it comes to taste.  You will never buy frozen rolls again.............

Savory Bread Pudding

Easy Weeknight Dish

Last night I was not in the mood to cook....can you imagine.  I stood staring at my pantry full of can goods hoping dinner would jump up and fix it's self.....A stale loaf of french bread was on the bar.  And I was just about to order a pizza when bread pudding came to mind, and 45 minutes later we had a new favorite recipe.  There are a lot of different ways you could make this dish.  If I had had onion, mushrooms and peppers I would have added them......The great thing about this recipe is you can make it with what ever you have on hand........

Market Bag Tutorial

Earth Day Sewing Project

Going green is so hard.  About a year ago I decided to start using reusable market bags.  I was so proud of myself....until I learned that the bags I had purchased had been recalled because of lead paint.  How ironic that the the bags that were supposed to be helping the planet were spewing toxic chemicals into the atmosphere in the manufacturing process.  They weren't very well made either and would have had to be replaced............

Homemade Floor Cleaners

A Greener Home Part 2

My going green plan is saving us a lot of green as in cash....Laminate floor cleaner is $5 a bottle and I have to go to a special store to get it.  No more!  The four simple ingredients were under my sink already.  Who knew....And the best part is it works so much better than the store bought...no streaks....I also found a recipe for carpet stain remover that actually works saving another $5 and reducing the impact on the environment to boot.....

Fruit and Grain Bars

A Healthy Snack

For years I bought fruit and grain bars for my kids thinking I was giving them a healthy snack.  Then I learned all about High fructose corn syrup and how bad it is for you.  Msg is another ingredient I have learned to stay away from.  But it is almost imposible to totally  avoid them.  Unless you make everything from scratch.  Here is a recipe that I've been using to replace those nasty store bought fruit and grain bars........

A Greener Home Part 1

Making my home greener a little at a time.  I love a fresh smelling home but not at the expense of my family's health.  So to freshen things up without the added chemicals not to mention the impact on the environment, I found a great alternative.  And guess what the main ingredients are Water and Vinegar.  Over the next few months I'll be adding more green alternatives so stay tuned...

Grandma's Pink Stuff

suni
Easter Sunday Treat

Pink Stuff always signified a holiday or special occasion at my Grandma's house. She always served it in her favorite Milk Glass Fruit Bowl.  My grandma was the mother of 9 and times were usually hard,  that milk glass bowl was as fine as china to her.  It was always the last thing to be brought out of the kitchen and was the signal to gather around the table and give thanks to God.
This Easter I'll be serving my Grandma's Pink Stuff to my family and sharing stories about her with my children, some of who never got to know her.  Isn't it funny how a dish can bring back such wonderful memories......

Bias Binding Tutorial

suni No waste method

Learn how to make 239 inches of bias binding from a 24" square of fabric in under an hour.
Bias binding is great for quilt projects with curves.  It also makes checks and plaids look nicer when they're cut on the bias.
Sometimes when I don't feel inspired but I want to be productive I just make binding from leftover scraps and put it away for a rainy day.
