The Farmers Wife

Quilt Along Party Part 1

The Farmers Wife is a quilting book written by Laurie Aaaron Hird.  It's filled with letters from farm wives in the 1920's.  Every few blocks comes with a wonderful letter explaining why they chose to become farmers wives.  As you read their letters you make a block a week or more if you choose.  And when you are done you will have a 83" x 103" sampler quilt with 111 different quilt blocks.  I'd love for you to quilt along with me as I make three blocks a week.  I'm also adding a linky tool so everyone can share their color combinations.

I'm so excited to be getting started on this project(again).  I started it back in October when I first started this blog and it kind of got put on the back burner.  But now I'm ready to get back to it and I hope you'll join me.  There is a link to the book at the bottom of the page.......you'll need it to join in.  Every week we'll meet up and share our blocks though linky tools.  If your a blogger you know how to link up.......If your not a blogger then make yourself a quilting Facebook page(its free) then use the URL from it to link up......if you have any questions about it just E-mail me subject-quilt along : )  Once you get your book you'll print the pattern pieces out from the CD that is included.  Now the farmers wives didn't have rotary  cutters, they would have pinned the pattern pieces onto the fabric and cut around it with scissors and the pieced it by hand...... I have to confess I am not doing it that way..... I print off the pieces and then use my rotary cutter to get an accurate cut.  And I machine stitch it.
It seems I spend 90% of my quilting time trying to decide what fabrics to use.  So I decided not to decide....I've had this stack of 30's prints for months now and haven't even made a cut on them.  I admit I'm a fabric hoarder, I like to iron and fold it and stack it up neatly on my shelf.
So for the Farmers Wife quilt I'm going to try not to think about the fabric to much.  I remember my grandmother would make her quilts out of scraps, so every quilt was unique and practical.  In that spirit I am going to be as scrappy and un-matchy as possible.
Most of the fabrics in this quilt came from Connecting Threads online clearance rack.  Here is the link to: The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt: Letters from 1920s Farm Wives and the 111 Blocks They Inspired

  5. What a great idea. I wish I had time to quilt, but I just can't see being able to do it any time soon. I'm with you, the choosing and deciding is really time consuming. That's what always held me up when I used to quilt. I like your idea of not choosing. I might actually be able to do such a quilt if I tried your plan. I'll be watching to see what you all come up with. It sounds like fun!

  8. I'm a quilting beginner - I recently finished my second baby quilt, and am just starting in on a full queen. I love these books - I think there is one of Civil War era blocks too. I'm sorry I can't join you on this Quilt-Along, but I wish you all the best. Love those 30s prints!

  9. Very cool idea, and it's going to be great for using up some fabric scraps! I'm a fairly beginner quilter (I've only ever made two, and one of them was a t-shirt quilt so it was pretty easy) but I love quilting! Thanks so much for sharing this at The Fun In Functional!

  14. I've had this book for over a year, I've read it cover to cover and it almost always on the bedside for 'night time reading' finding the fabric is always my issue! Maybe I'll dust it off and follow along with you!
