The Farmer's Wife

Quilt Along part 3

Welcome back!  I hope you are all quilting right along.    Last week I shared with you a way to make easy Hourglass units.  This week I've included an Easy triangle Square short cut for block number 9. Instead of cutting out each little triangle piece and wasting a lot of fabric you start with 2 squares.  I also used my handy dandy little marking ruler to make it go even faster.  And don't forget to share your blocks with us..........the linky is on Week #1

Farmers Wife Week 3
If you would like to join the quilt along here's the link to the book
The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt: Letters from 1920s Farm Wives and the 111 Blocks They Inspired
Block # 7 has a lot of little pieces the finished little triangle squares came out to a mere 1".

This is my favorite block so far.  I may make 4 more of these and use them to create a table runner by laying them out on point.  What do ya think?

I am adding a short cut for this block.  You can use this technique for any triangle square simply by adding 7/8" to the desired finished block size and following the directions below.
1. Cut 8 2-7/8" squares total, 4 light and 4 dark.
2-3. Draw a line from corner to corner and then 1/4 " on each side.  Or you can use this nifty little Omnigrid 4-6-12-Inch Marking Ruler Trio.

4-5. Sew on the marked lines and cut in half.
6-7. Press open and trim the dog ears off.
8-9. For the center cut a 2-1/2" square.  Layout and sew together using a 1/4" seam allowance.

  8. These blocks are super cute! I love that you did a quick tutorial for HSTs. That's how I make mine, and if I'm working with larger pieces of fabric, I can also draw a line between the other 2 corners, sewing on either side and get 8 HSTs.
