The Farmer's Wife

Quilt along Part 2

Hey ya'll It's time to share this week's quilt blocks.  I'm having so much fun with this fabric, the prints are just so darn cute.  I can't wait to see what fabrics you all are using.  This week's blocks were pretty easy and they didn't take long to whip together.  I added a shortcut tutorial for block number 6.  And shared how I made number 4 go a little faster as well.  I hope your all enjoying this series...I know I am : )

Finding the time to quilt.  I love to quilt if I didn't have kids to feed and a house to keep I would quilt all day.  There is just something about it, when I sew everything else just melts away.  It is the ultimate stress reliever.... for me anyway ......and the best part is when you are done you have a beautiful work of art.  So find time to quilt this week.....because quilting is good for your soul : )
This block is a fairly simple one.  I used the rotary cutter and cut strips of each of the colors the proper width.  Then I sewed the 3 strips together, pressed and cut them the proper length.  I had some left over and I went ahead and made another block I'll save it for another project or a pot holder.

This is a really neat block.  Imagine what a whole quilt made from this would look like and all the different ways to you could lay it out.

I thought I'd share a short cut with you for this one.  If you get Fons and Porter's Magazine then you already know this trick.  Here are the measurements to get a 6 1/2" block.

Hour Glass Short Cut

2. Draw a line from corner to corner.
3. Then draw a line 1/4" from the center line, on each side.
4. Sew on the outside lines.
5. Cut the middle line.
6. Press open.

7. Stack the 2 pieces with light on dark and dark on light fabrics.
Draw lines again.  Sew on the outside lines.
8. Cut the center line and press open.
9. Cut off the dog ears.
10. This is how I press the middle open to avoid a bump.
11. Layout.
12. Piece together.  Finished size is 6 1/2".
