A cheaper alternative
to the pricey all-natural brands....which I have found out are not so natural. If you're like me you're super careful what you buy for your family. I lost faith in that little label that is stamped on all our US products, when they found arsenic in the apple juice. Now I read every ingredient and google it. So here's what I found out. Glycerin is not bad but its bad for your teeth. It is the first ingredient in the $5 name brand natural toothpaste I was using. Glycerin coats the teeth and prevents them from remineralizing..........
Sodium Laurel Sulfate(a carcinogen), saccharin, and floride are also ingredients with questionable benefits and risks. I like to keep things simple so here is my simple cheap
alternative to the store bought all-natural stuff..... Please note that your family will protest because they are used to their blue sparkly transformer or barbie brand.... to keep it fun for them let your little ones add stickers to the bag and you could also try bubble gum flavoring......

| Recipe 1/2 c. baking soda 2 Tbs. coconut oil* 1 Tbs. Zylitol* 12 drops of essential oil* a pinch of salt 2 Tbs. water
Mix the first 5 ingredients up and then add the water. You may or may not need 2 Tbs. depending on how thick or thin you like it. Let the mixture set for a few hours before using to give everything time to dissolve. Place into a piping bag or a ziplock bag and snip off the corner.
* Coconut oil- I bought mine at the grocery store on the baking isle next to the other oils. Coconut oil gives the toothpaste body and it is antibacterial.
* Zylitol- Is an all-natural sweetener you can buy at most health food stores. Is is becoming a popular ingredient in gums and toothpaste for its ability to prevent cavities. This ingredient is the most important for that reason and because it is sweet, which is what we are all used to in a toothpaste. It helps make the toothpaste not taste like baking soda....yuck! * Essential oil- I used peppermint available at the health food store or online @
It has taken me a few months of trail and error to find the right recipe for my family. There are a lot of recipes out there, with several different ingredients. I think we tried them all......my poor kids and husband were glad to finally have a toothpaste they liked. And I was glad to have a healthy alternative!

I love this! Thank you for sharing and thank you to your family for enduring the trial and error so we can all benefit ;)!
ReplyDeleteNo way! Seriously, the number one ingredient in toothpaste is BAD for the teeth?! Wow - I'm going to check out my toothpaste ingredients now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. New follower :)

Thanks so much for very valuable info and a recipe for toothpaste that's not going to ruin our teeth. We all need to be more attentive, look into what goes into our mouths and bodies. That's scarey.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the idea of homemade toothpaste and I LOVE the idea of using a piping bag or cut zip-lock! I have been reluctant to make our toothpaste because the recipes I've read all said to put it in a tub and dip your toothbrush... ummm.. YUCK!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this!

This sounds so awesome! Thank you, again, for your family's trial and error so we dont have too. So looking forward to trying this.
ReplyDeleteI honestly had no idea about the unsafe ingredients in toothpaste. Thanks so much for sharing this. Really makes you stop and think.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow, good information and great tip for a safer alternative!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. I knew there had to be something better than just baking soda and water.
ReplyDeleteYay! Love this. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting that I really want to try this. Next time our stockpile runs low, I need to remember.:)
ReplyDeleteThis is almost the exact recipe we use for homemade toothpaste.
ReplyDeleteI'd love for you to link this post to my Finished Friday Blog Party.
Great idea. I've done the baking soda thing, but I would just pour a little into my hand. This sounds like something I would try. I recently started using toothpaste and shampoo that doesn't have the sodium laurel yada yada because I found it that it was causing my mouth to break out in sores. Since I stopped using it, the sores have gone away. I was happy to find a shampoo that didn't have it. That ingredient apparently is what makes stuff sudsy. That's what my dental hygienist told me. Have a happy 4th.
ReplyDeleteThere is no end to your creativity in making things healthier!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a good recipe! Will have to try it. Do you think it's okay to replace the sweetener with honey, or does that just coat your teeth with sugar? I've seen other recipes that used Stevia.
ReplyDeleteHey, you don't have to keep it in a ziplock or an icing piping bag. Outdoor places like REI sell empty tubes for camping/hiking/backpacking that you can fill with anything. I discovered them when my friend whipped out his peanut butter and jelly-filled tube on a hike. (Funny, right?) The end that's usually sealed (opposite the cap) is slit open and has a clip to close it.
ReplyDeleteWho would have thought?
ReplyDeleteI found you via the Tuesday Talent Show from Chef in Training
I have linked up a simple little cheese and cracker plate
Have a super week.
How fun! I never thought to make my own toothpaste, but I will give this a try! Thanks!

Looks like a fabulous idea !! Come link it up with us at our party: http://www.finecraftguild.com/party/ . This is something to show off!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great recipe! I love coconut oil for all it's many benefits. Please let your readers know about xylitol's deadly effect on dogs. A tiny amount accidentally ingested can kill a dog in as little as 20 minutes. Don't want to be a downer, but would hate for someone to suffer.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for this kind of tooth paste. i will have to try it out. Come by and see us.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this recipe!! Others I've tried have just been too salty. Like vinegar, I'm finding coconut oil has so many wonderful uses. :)
ReplyDeleteTake care,

Sounds like a keeper recipe!
ReplyDeleteI just made this tooth paste today. I couldn't wait to try it. I love it!! My whole mouth feels so clean. I went back and made another double batch but without the salt.
