No more itchy scalp
I decided to make my own shampoo not just to save money but because I could not find a shampoo that didn't make my head itch. I have extremely sensitive skin. I can't wear perfume or even use hair spray. This recipe has saved my hair and scalp. Store bought shampoo is full of dyes, perfumes and even alcohol which is sure to dry your scalp and make it itch. Even if you don't have an itchy scalp this is a great shampoo and you can adjust it to your hair type.

Ingredients:
- 1/2 c. of Rosemary-helps prevents baldness
- 1/2 c. of Sage leaf*-antioxidants/antibacterial
- 1/2 c. of Lavender-reduces itchy scalp
- 1/2 c. of Nettle leaf*-stimulates hair growth
- 4000 mg of MSM-To improve the strength of your hair.
- 4 c. of distilled water
- 1 c. of castile soap*
- 1/4 tsp. vitamin E oil
- 1/2 tsp. glycerin
- 2 Tbsp. Aloe Vera gel
- Lavender essential oil(optional)
- 2 - 8 oz. bottles
Steps: 1. Mix all the herbs together then measure out 1/2 of a cup of the mixed herbs. Save the rest for future use. Label, shampoo herbs. 2. Empty 4000 mg of MSM capsules in to a bowl and set aside. 3. Bring water to a boil and add 1/2 cup of the mixed herbs. Turn off the heat and let steep for 30 minutes then add the MSM powder and stir until dissolved. Pour the tea through a strainer. 4. In a glass measuring cup combine vitamin E, glycerin, aloe vera gel, essential oil and castile soap. Pour half of the soap mixture into each of the 8 oz. bottles. Then fill the rest of the bottles with the tea mixture. Leave room to shake. 5. Store the rest of the tea in a glass jar and label for future use.
I recommend that you experiment with the amounts to get a shampoo that suites your hair type. This recipe works great for me and my itchy scalp and dry hair.
Homemade shampoo is not like store bought. Store bought gives you lots of suds, but suds don't mean clean healthy hair. I put a small amount of glycerin in this recipe to give you a little suds. It is also not as thick a store bought. Just remember different is not bad.
For conditioner I use apple cider vinegar. I put 50/50 water to vinegar in a plastic squeeze bottle. Be careful because vinegar will burn your eyes.
*If you have concerns about the MSM. Consult a doctor before using, especially if you are using medications. I did find Methylsulfonylmethane(MSM) in some store brand shampoos.
*Nettle leaf: I could not find this ingredient at the mega-marts. I ordered it from Mountain Rose Herbs. $3.00 for 4 oz. *Sage leaf: Not powdered stuff. I also ordered this from Mountain Rose Herbs. $3.75 for 4 oz. *Castile Soap: also available from Mountain Rose Herbs. I did spot Dr. Bonners castile soap at Target in the beauty department. *MSM: I found at Wal-mart make sure it is plain MSM with out glucosamine.

Hi Deana!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your recipe.
I've been using home made shampoo for about 2 years now and I have to say I love it. I started mainly because I didn't like shampoo commercials telling me I HAVE to use their product or I'll become a greasy lonely mess spewing dandruff left right and centre...
I've recently been experimenting with different formulas with mixed results. Some have been disastrous but luckily not all of them!
I'll definitely be giving your formula a go.
Cheers,
Rob

I will def give this a try. I have always had an itchy scalp. I recently tried Wen products, paid a fortune for them. It was awful stuff. Felt like I had greasy, dirty hair for 30 days. Ick. I love the thoughts that this is organic too. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI think I`m going to give this a try. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've been using shampoo bars, but am looking for something easier for my 8 year old to use. I have all these ingredients except the MSM. I've never even heard of that one, so we'll see if I can find it at WalMart! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
Hi Mrs.Z
DeleteIf you are making this for a child just leave out the MSM. It is a supplement used for joint pain and discomfort its basically sulfure. It helps with hair breakage. The shampoo will work without it. Thanks for stopping by :)
Thanks Deana for a great post! I am a super sensitive person too! Most smelly things will give me migraines including cleaning products and shampoos unless they use natural fragrance. I can't wait to give this a try! Thank you for stopping by and leaving the sweet comment for my son it is greatly appreciated!
