A Greener Home Part 1
Making my home greener a little at a time. I love a fresh smelling home but not at the expense of my family's health. So to freshen things up without the added chemicals not to mention the impact on the environment, I found a great alternative. And guess what the main ingredients are Water and Vinegar. Over the next few months I'll be adding more green alternatives so stay tuned...

I just recently started following your blog and I'm not even sure if I've commented before... so hi! I love a fresh smelling house too but with three dogs, two cats, a baby and two adults, it's not always smelling good! I started trying to go green a few months back too and I sprayed a water and vinegar mix everywhere. I love the smell of vinegar (I'm weird, I know... but it reminds me of when I worked a bakery and we made red velvet cake from scratch and it's one of the ingredients). I recently bought some citrus to make my house smell even better. My chihuahua has some peeing issues on my livingroom rug and the heat brings out the smell...YUCK! I haven't tried it, so thanks for the recipe so I know how many drops to add. I'm thinking I need some more scents though, like lavender!
ReplyDeleteHey there, I have the same issue-I have found that sprinkling baking soda on the spot (immediately after it happens is best obviously) helps. It's soaks up the liquid and then deodorizes too. Then I spray with the vinegar spray and also an enzymatic cleaner like Natures Miracle. I wonder if tea Tree oil would be a good oil to try. I'm sure the pee has gone to the pad which is probably contributing to the smell issue :-( Good luck!
DeleteI have to try this. Like you I want my home to smell nice, but I worry about the chemicals in commercial air fresheners. Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower, and I'm so glad I joined!
I love this! I'm totally going to try this. I usually can't use air fresheners because fragrance gives me headaches, but I can just leave fragrance out of this :) Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I hope you don't mind that I pin it. :) Megan
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. I am uneasy every time I spray air freshener, but sometimes it's necessary you know lol! I'm going to try this.

Thanks for this recipe. Most homemade air fresheners I see used vodka but that isn't something I ever have. These ingredients you mention are always on my shelf. I am excited to try this!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to slowly but surely convert to homemade/greener cleaning products as well. Thanks for sharing..I'll be following this series and pinning everything so that I can go green along with you. Already pinned the air freshener.

I have been making my own air freshener for the past few months, only instead of vinegar I have been using Witch Hazel. Thanks for posting yours!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I'm pinning this and can't wait to give it a try. Thanks so much for sharing at Mom On Timeout!
ReplyDeleteThis might sound weird but I read that vodka also makes a great air freshener (kills bacteria, evaporates quickly). It's definitely more expensive than vinegar but in a pinch, it'll do!
ReplyDeleteSounds great, gotta try it. I've always used vodka in mine. It's used to make the oils mix with the water and it has no smell. If you use the vodka, you can make a peppermint one to spray in the mouth for sore throats, on the face to cool down on a hot day/hot flashes, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt is 2013 I found your blog looking for yeast rolls recipe. I noticed this article about freshners and thought you and your readers would enjoy a laught :) My ignorance of not asking anyone what was safe or not. We had a horrible smell in our house, my husband went under the crawl space and found dead rodents. Yuk Yuk. So my bright idea , moth balls, so my hubby emptied a box under the house. By 9 p.m. we could not stand the house and was getting sick. So we turned off the heat , opened all windows and enjoyed the 30 degree weather outside. We could not get the smell out, he used a fan , windows open, and I must go back one sentence. My poor husband had to go under the house and remove all moth balls, but he put car freshners down. Well a long story short after one wk., airing out the house, putting a fan under the house and using vinegar in bowls and baking soda around the house we are now able to live in the house. When we would come home the smell of moth balls would about kill yah. Long story short, we could of died, we could of had to go to the hospital, and or we could of have long lasting health issues. So before trying something I will check it out first, ask someone, and look on the internet. Go Green- Go organic Thank you Sorry it was so long.
