| Shopping the big box stores is a great way to save money and be prepared....But what do you do with 25lb of sugar? |
| An even better choice is a Gamma Lid they make a screw off lid that fits standard buckets. I found the best place to get them is Amazon. You can also get tablets that will remove all the air from the bucket for long term storage.
|
| I use the Gamma Lids for flour and sugar...then I keep a canister on my bar and refill it from the bucket. |
| 1 bucket holds a 25 lb bag of sugar with room to spare. |
| Now that you have filled your buckets you need to find a place for them....I put mine behind the laundry room door...Just be carful stacking them to high if you have curious little ones running around. |
| These containers are great for smaller amounts...I got them at Wal-Mart($2 small,$4 large) |
| Another way to store flour is to freeze it...I hope this post has been helpful to you...If you have any questions leave a comment or email me:) Shared@Link Parties found here |

Thanks for the info. I have a membership to Costco and so I too purchase items in LARGE quantities...keeping the extra tucked away in the pantry and smaller quantities in my kitchen "close to the action". I had never thought of the 5gallon buckets...great idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the ideas. Since it's just the 2 of us I rarely buy large quantities of sugar or flour. Hubby can't understand why I want to buy even 10 lbs of sugar at a time. I don't bake much any more, so flour and sugar are only purchased in 5 lb bags. My big purchases are usually paper goods. We seem to go through those the fastest!

Awesome post! Thank you. I have heard about Gamma lids, but didn't think to shop for them on Amazon. We are rural, so nobody in town stocks em. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I'm trying to cut the ubiquitous HF corn syrup and chemicals out of my diet which means a lot of making food from scratch! It's crazy how much cheaper everything is in bulk! I'm pinning this for my pantry re-do I'll be taking on this year. If I wasn't already a follower this would win me over!

We have our flour and sugar in buckets I didn't think about if they were food grade. Will have to go check. Thanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteThis is such great info! My mom has a problem with mice in her pantry area. I'll totally have to pass this along! Nice to know there is a food grade plastic bucket too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for passing the info along and linking up!

I like using screw top lids for dry goods. Good tips!
ReplyDeleteI've never bought the big bags of flour and sugar because I never could store them and keep them fresh. You've solved that one for me, thanks so much for the info.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was being smart by buying the 25 pound bags of flour and sugar, until I realized I had nowhere to put them. Needless to say, they didn't last and I had to toss them out. I felt so wasteful and vowed to never buy that big of a bag again until I had the proper way to store. All your ideas are wonderful!
ReplyDeletethanks for these ideas...I always have the problem on storing bulky items as my containers are small... Found you via Sugar & Spice linky party.Would like to invite you to join with

These are great ideas. We used to buy in bulk all of the time. No real wholesale shops where we live now, but wish I had these ideas back then. :)

Good tips! We store our food much like you do. I love using half gallon Mason Jars in my cupboards for the stuff I use daily--and the buckets go in my pantry. I never would have thought Iwould be purchasing food by the 50# bag! LOL
ReplyDeleteThis was a really great post and I think I will look in to getting the large quantities from restaurant suppliers.
ReplyDeleteI have never froze my flour before. Does it have to unfreeze before you use it like yeast?
ReplyDeleteI have never unfrozen yeast. I store mine in the freezer and I just use a teaspoon or whatever to get the right amount out and use it like any yeast.
DeleteI would love it if your shared this with my new blog hop:

ReplyDeleteWOW....I do the same thing!! I need to find a Local Restaurant Supply in my area!! Good to know! Are you in Utah?
ReplyDeleteGulf Coast.... I have to be prepared for hurricanes....
DeleteI purchase the huge bags of flour and keep it in my deep freeze with a large sealed bowl of it in my kitchen. If i need some from the freezer while baking, i toast it in the oven. Spread out on a cookie sheet at 350* stirring every 10 minutes for total of 20-30 minutes. We have a store called cash and carry have found some great bargains there... but check the unit pricing against what your big box store usual price. Just because it's a large container doesn't always mean more economical. ;) Off to shop for 5 gal buckets for the other staples.
ReplyDeleteI like those little containers with the white lids from walmart. I have been saving glass jars from apple sauce, etc, to use like that. But I like how those are all uniform. Do you know about how big the big and little ones are, in volume, approximately?
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for stopping by....to answer your question, the large containers are 1 gal. and the small are 2 QT. the brand name is Mainstays....hope this info helps...
Deletehave a great day!
Great post. Good info for me. I really need to start storing grains and such. It is just too ba my family is so not on board. :(
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Lowes had food grade buckets - THANKS!
