Food Storage Ideas

Shopping the big box stores
is a great way to save money
and be prepared....But what
do you do with 25lb of sugar?

Buckets are the cheapest way
to store bulk dry goods from the
big box stores.
Lowe's carries a paint bucket
that is food grade.  Its Very
important that it be labeled
food grade.

Make sure that the lids you use
have a rubber seal in them.

An even better choice is a
Gamma Lid they make a screw off
lid that fits standard buckets.
I found the best place to get them
is Amazon. You can also get tablets
that will remove all the air from the
bucket for long term storage.

The big box stores are great. But..
your local restaurant supply
can order anything you want
like a 50lb bag of unbleached flour
for $20...No membership fee required.
And a 25lb bag of corn meal
for $11.
I use the Gamma Lids for flour
and sugar...then I keep a canister
on my bar and refill it from the
bucket.

1 bucket holds a 25 lb bag of sugar
with room to spare.

Now that you have filled your
buckets you need to find a place
for them....I put mine behind the
laundry room door...Just be carful
stacking them to high if you have
curious little ones running
around.

These containers are great for
smaller amounts...I got them at

 Wal-Mart($2 small,$4 large)

Another way to store flour is
to freeze it...I hope this post
has been helpful to you...If you
have any questions leave a comment
or email me:)

  1. Thanks for the info. I have a membership to Costco and so I too purchase items in LARGE quantities...keeping the extra tucked away in the pantry and smaller quantities in my kitchen "close to the action". I had never thought of the 5gallon buckets...great idea! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks for the ideas. Since it's just the 2 of us I rarely buy large quantities of sugar or flour. Hubby can't understand why I want to buy even 10 lbs of sugar at a time. I don't bake much any more, so flour and sugar are only purchased in 5 lb bags. My big purchases are usually paper goods. We seem to go through those the fastest!

  3. Awesome post! Thank you. I have heard about Gamma lids, but didn't think to shop for them on Amazon. We are rural, so nobody in town stocks em. Thanks again!

  4. Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to cut the ubiquitous HF corn syrup and chemicals out of my diet which means a lot of making food from scratch! It's crazy how much cheaper everything is in bulk! I'm pinning this for my pantry re-do I'll be taking on this year. If I wasn't already a follower this would win me over!

  9. I've never bought the big bags of flour and sugar because I never could store them and keep them fresh. You've solved that one for me, thanks so much for the info.

  10. I thought I was being smart by buying the 25 pound bags of flour and sugar, until I realized I had nowhere to put them. Needless to say, they didn't last and I had to toss them out. I felt so wasteful and vowed to never buy that big of a bag again until I had the proper way to store. All your ideas are wonderful!

  17. Good tips! We store our food much like you do. I love using half gallon Mason Jars in my cupboards for the stuff I use daily--and the buckets go in my pantry. I never would have thought Iwould be purchasing food by the 50# bag! LOL

  19. I have never froze my flour before. Does it have to unfreeze before you use it like yeast?

    1. I have never unfrozen yeast. I store mine in the freezer and I just use a teaspoon or whatever to get the right amount out and use it like any yeast.

  28. I purchase the huge bags of flour and keep it in my deep freeze with a large sealed bowl of it in my kitchen. If i need some from the freezer while baking, i toast it in the oven. Spread out on a cookie sheet at 350* stirring every 10 minutes for total of 20-30 minutes. We have a store called cash and carry have found some great bargains there... but check the unit pricing against what your big box store usual price. Just because it's a large container doesn't always mean more economical. ;) Off to shop for 5 gal buckets for the other staples.

  29. I like those little containers with the white lids from walmart. I have been saving glass jars from apple sauce, etc, to use like that. But I like how those are all uniform. Do you know about how big the big and little ones are, in volume, approximately?
